Alpine Gardens Park, Central Northside: 514 Alpine Avenue
Hidden among the narrow streets and rowhouses in the Mexican War Streets section of the Central Northside, the Alpine Gardens Park (aka “Alpine Parklet” if you’re looking on Google Maps) can easily be overlooked. For this reason, it’s worth searching out, as it has a tranquil combination of playground equipment, park benches, native plant landscaping, and murals. There are also tree swings hanging from a sturdy-looking tree (that are likely fine for light and slender bodies). It’s a small space that offers quite a bit of engagement yet still feels spacious, open, and completely natural. It’s hard to believe several structures once occupied this footprint.
Before annexation by Pittsburgh in 1906, this neighborhood was part of Allegheny City, and it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited residential areas that has preserved much of its historical charm and architectural details. Fortunately, plenty of modern amenities and attractions are also nearby (Mattress Factory, City of Asylum, Commonplace Coffee, and Monterey Pub, to name a few). Whether walking with kids or dogs or spending quiet time rambling alone, this is a worthwhile place to visit, look around, and reconnect with the past and present. Much like the land the park inhabits, you may find yourself transformed.
