August Wilson Park, Crawford Roberts: 1801 Cliff Street
Established in 1975 as Cliffside Park, this green space underwent a total makeover and a name change in 2016, thanks to community input and the work of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy. The new August Wilson Community Park features ADA-accessible pathways, redesigned landscaping, play areas and seating, and half-basketball courts. The only thing that hasn’t changed is the amazing panorama (it was called Cliffside Park for a reason). Meandering around, it’s easy to find inspiration in the giant photographic murals from the Charles “Teenie” Harris archives and quotes from the playwright August Wilson, whose house and cultural center are nearby on Bedford Avenue. “We Came from the Stars” is the theme of Alicia Wormsley’s art installation, which sets your sights out and over the landscape. It’s a fitting point of view because everything about this space feels heavenly and full of light.
