Eileen McCoy Playground, Duquesne Heights

Eileen McCoy Playground, Duquesne Heights: Shaler & Greenleaf Streets

The corner lot at the intersection of Shaler and Greenleaf Streets in Duquesne Heights was once part of a farm owned by the Shaler and Bigham families. In the 1930s, it was donated to become a playground, which is now named after Eileen McCoy, a long-time resident who, for many decades, was known as the playground’s steward, champion, and occasional referee, nurse, and arbiter of disputes. While it’s easy to agree that playgrounds are a good thing, not everyone wants to live next to one. Eileen embraced the opportunity and responsibility.

While wandering around the internet, learning about Eileen, I stumbled upon Lyila Wirth, who has a more recent connection to the playground and neighborhood. In September 2023, 13-year-old Lyila was grounded by her parents (for what is unclear) and required to perform community service. Lyila chose to clean up the litter in the Eileen McCoy Playground and nearby streets. What started as a consequence quickly transformed into something more meaningful, as Lyila noticed recurring litter on certain streets, sidewalks, and parks. She began taking weekly walks, proudly wearing blue or pink latex gloves and carrying two plastic bags to assist her “redd up” efforts.

Earlier this year, Lyila was awarded a city council proclamation for her ongoing neighborhood service. Tuesday, April 29, 2025, was designated “Lyila Wirth Day” in the City of Pittsburgh. Thank you to everyone who takes on responsibilities that others would avoid; these decisions make a noticeable difference in our world.
