Fineview Field, Fineview: 415 Jay Street
The Fineview Overlook is one of the most stunning spots in the city (especially for viewing fireworks), but the next time you’re there, ooh-ing and aah-ing over the downtown skyscrapers, bridges, rivers, and hillside views, drop your eyes and look DOWN. Directly below is the Fineview Field ballpark. It might not seem like much, but it’s worth a look-see. To get there, walk up Catoma Street, take a right on Myler, and a right on Jay. The steep and curving street ends at the park.
The hillside trees obscure the panorama that makes the Overlook so enticing, but what’s fascinating about this space is looking UP at the cliff-side. At the edge of the outfield, you’re confronted with its straight-up, craggy surface. The exposed rock is massive and weighty, making you feel tiny and fragile in comparison. I wonder if the presence of this geological structure has impacted the pitching, hitting, catching, and running abilities of the teams playing here. I’m sure someone, at some point in time, has used it as the rationale for unbelievable wins or catastrophic losses. 😉
