Healthy Active Living Center, Homewood North: 7319 Frankstown Avenue
The streets of Homewood tell the stories of depopulation, economic disinvestment, government and private enterprise corruption and racism, and the all-too-often tendency to lean away from complex problems requiring long-term, complex solutions.
But the CitiParks Healthy Active Living Center is here on Frankstown Avenue, engaging with a committed and activated group who call this City and neighborhood home. Almost all remember the days when streetcars traveled through, shops were plentiful, and there were more occupied homes than empty lots.
Despite the current conditions, they come to HAL to exercise and play bingo, eat lunch, and enjoy the monthly concerts featuring some of Pittsburgh’s legendary jazz musicians. A reminder that staying put and showing up are also acts of defiance and love.
