Kite Hill Park, Garfield: 5450 Rosetta Street
Was there ever a time when kites were flown from Kite Hill Park in Garfield? Aerial photographs from the 1930s through the 1950s indicate a cleared space. So, the likelihood is strong. But today, probably not. Like many other hilltop locations around the city, it’s now ringed by trees and prone to overgrowth and invasive species. While trees are not ideal for kites, the shade they cast is probably appreciated by those using the basketball court.
Reaching Kite Hill can be a bit of a challenge as the access track is very steep. On the Hillcrest Street side of the park, it’s easy to miss the narrow paved path, especially when greenery is abundant. The Rosetta Street entrance is easier to identify thanks to a metal sculpture of a kite, forever recalling flying days high atop the Garfield hills.
