Lincoln Place Parklet and War Memorial, Neighborhood Park: 1100 Elwell Street

The Veterans Memorial is located by the school’s front entrance, high on the hilltop, overlooking Mifflin Road, and the dedication marker is out back, next to the playground equipment. This separation strikes me as somewhat unusual, and I wonder if the two were originally together in the “Lincoln Place Parklet” but then separated. The playground is a shady, welcoming space with an assortment of equipment, and it is likely busy after school. As kids are known for climbing on anything in their paths, a relocation likely seemed a wise choice.

In my months of visiting parks and playgrounds in Pittsburgh, I’ve encountered many war and veteran memorials. In fact, the City has 120 of them scattered throughout the 90 neighborhoods. If you’re interested in exploring this part of Pittsburgh’s history, an online map is available to help you find their locations. The URL is a monstrosity, but if you search for “City of Pittsburgh Art locations”, you’ll find a page called, Interactive Apps, Maps, and Dashboards that has the link. It’s an easy way to find all of the official public art locations (including monuments and memorials), and explore.

There’s only one problem: the Lincoln Place memorial isn’t listed. *sigh* Sometimes everything works as expected, and other times… not quite! I guess it’s now my task to send emails pointing out the oversight. 🙂
