Mutual Parklet, Sheraden: 1327 Mutual Street
The word mutual means a feeling or action that is held in common by two or more parties. Unfortunately, there’s not much mutuality happening at the Mutual Parklet these days. It’s not that the space is abused or disrespected; its ambiance is more of weariness and lack of energy. Think of a hazy, hot, and humid summer day when the air quality stinks. Or a cold and grey winter day in a long string of cold, grey winter days. A bit beaten down. A bit resigned.
But that feeling is not mutual when looking at the nearby streets. In fact, the surrounding neighborhood is a bit like an early summer day with a mix of clouds and sun, with a light breeze. Conditions trending in a positive direction.
I’m guessing that back when Tom Murphy was mayor, and this park was repaired (and the sign installed), more children lived here, so there was mutual appreciation between the park and the residents. But that was a long time ago, and those Millennial kids are adults now. What should we do when our shared and common friendships, benefits, and understandings fray and fall away?
