Pauline Park, Beechview: 2154 Pauline Avenue
For anyone unfamiliar with Beechview, this South Hills neighborhood is known for its roller-coaster streets that traverse some of the steepest terrains in the city (and it should come as no surprise that Beechview is home to Canton Avenue, the official winner in the steepest street in the continental US competition).
Pauline Avenue is a half-mile-long stretch connecting two main thoroughfares: Broadway, where you’ll find the T, and the W. Liberty Avenue “speedway,” featuring a comprehensive selection of vehicles driving well above the posted speed limit. Pauline Park is closer to Broadway, and in this land of whipsaw elevation changes, it is blessedly flat.
Uncomplicated in presentation, there are basketball courts, a variety of playground equipment (including an old-school whirl spinner!), and a sizeable assortment of benches. The latter of which I don’t doubt the good people of Beechview want, need, and deserve.
*Bonus: For those curious about Beechview, City Steps of Pittsburgh: A History & Guide features a guided historical walking tour that incorporates the T. This park is close to the Belasco Ave stop, the Beechview Public Library, and lots of city steps!
