Phillips Park & Playground, Carrick:

Phillips Park & Playground, Carrick

Phillips Park & Playground, Carrick: 425 Sinton Avenue

Looking for a new outdoor activity to try this summer? How about disc golf! Phillips Park & Playground in Carrick is one of three locations in the City that offer fairways (the other two are Schenley and Riverview). Disc golf is played much like traditional golf, except players use a flying disc instead of a ball and clubs. A disc golf hole begins from a tee area and ends at a target, such as an elevated metal basket. Players make each consecutive throw from where the previous throw landed. Best of all, disc golf is super affordable, with a set of discs often costing under $35.

Online reviews of playing the Phillips course are positive overall and indicate it’s a good place for newcomers or those wanting to hone skills. The targets are adjacent to the playground and, because it’s Pittsburgh, on a relatively steep hill. So, in addition to practicing your aim and throwing techniques, you’ll get some cardio! For city steps enthusiasts, there are also a few sets nearby. And for others whose idea of recreation is relaxing on a park bench or under a shady tree, there are plenty of those, too—just keep an eye open for any errant throws!
