Roland Lockridge Community Park, New Homestead: 460 Revenue Street
New Homestead is on Pittsburgh’s southeastern edge, bordered by Hays and Lincoln Place and the adjacent boroughs of Munhall and West Homestead. According to the 2020 census data, there is a smidge over 900 residents. Not a lot, but similar to neighborhoods like Spring Garden, Bon Air, or the Pittsburgh side of Regent Square.
It’s a neighborhood that is almost 100% residential, but with a sizable geographic footprint, and clusters of homes are separated by large, undeveloped tracks of land. It’s easy to see why some find the tucked-away quality appealing: country living in proximity to city amenities.
On Revenue Street, there’s a small, relatively well-maintained playground. It’s unclear how many children still live nearby, but the wooded landscape makes it a popular spot with deer. Perhaps they’ve noticed the “No Hunting” signs. 🙂
Long ago, a shade tree was uprooted, but the stump remains, displaying its heart-like shape. Longer still, someone played horseshoes in the park, and someone else tried to sell adjacent land. Regardless of where we live, we are always taking action and making plans. Some come to fruition, some are abandoned, and others are left waiting, like a deer watching from the safety of the nearby woods.
