Shiloh Street Park, Emerald View Regional Park: 103 Shiloh Street, Mount Washington
Almost everyone walks on the “view” side of Grandview Avenue to take in the sights. After the well-warranted ooh-ing and aah-ing, selfies, and group photos, many folks dash across the street and slip under the Shiloh Street arch to partake in the refreshments all the local restaurants, cafes, and shops offer.
With all this sensory distraction and anticipation, it’s easy to overlook Shiloh Street Park. This little alcove is bordered by the two streets and nestled under a cluster of trees whose primary job is obscuring the transmitter tower planted behind them. There are several seats and a large local tourism map.
During my mid-morning weekday visit, the space was empty except for me and two older gentlemen in wheelchairs conversing in low, hushed tones. I spot them in the corner shadows and nod a friendly hello just as the easily identifiable aroma of sweet musty muskiness floats through the airspace. I chuckle, and they look at me with semi-sheepish grins. “We got a nice view!” one of them says with a cackle and a big smile. I smile back and give them a thumbs up. Don’t worry, my good sirs, you can count on me not to harsh your mellow. 🙂
