Trip #100 Herron Avenue to Wylie Avenue, Middle Hill (Hill District), Pittsburgh took place on February 15, 2018, and was published on February 26, 2018.
Why do humans so often have difficulty communicating an authentic apology? We’re either rattling off “sorry!” so frequently it becomes an automatic speech pattern, or else we’re mumbling it like an 8-year-old coerced by an angry parent. Head down, a few barely understandable words, high-tailing it out the door the second we’ve fulfilled the obligation. When I’ve witnessed a person apologizing deeply, humbly, authentically, I feel like more than just a bystander, I’ve become a participant in their emotional journey of seeking forgiveness. There isn’t any one way to offer that kind of apology, but I think we all know it when we see it or when we hear it. But that leads to the next question, if we were to be a witness to those words, what would our reaction be?
Field Notes: Some beautiful street art that’s been placed on this empty/abandoned building. It’s a shame it’s boarded up and crumbling – such a great location!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
