Trip #101 Ossipee Street to Lyon Street, Upper Hill (Hill District), Pittsburgh took place on February 15, 2018, and was published on February 26, 2018.
Erosion is a gradual destruction of a place through the relocation of its materials. Pittsburgh looks the way it does because of unceasing erosion. Water contributes to erosion. The air and the way the winds blow contribute to erosion. Gravity, well, we all know what that does, especially once the years start to pile on… And all too often we humans cause some of the worst erosion through short-term solutions with long-term problems. It’s a never-ending cycle. Erosion created the Pittsburgh landscape, and it will continue to define Pittsburgh, with hills falling, and valleys filling until we’re all on equal footing.
Field Notes: Another disappearing flight, gradually being absorbed by the movement of the earth. Right next to the historic Minersville Cemetery. Interesting story about the history and clean-up of the place was published last year.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
