Trip #108 Gribble Street, Perry North, Pittsburgh took place on March 3, 2018, and was published on March 16, 2018.
When we’re in an unfamiliar place, our eyes are open and alert trying to make sense of where we are. Even familiar landmarks like a highway, water tower, or the city skyline can look different, even unrecognizable. And that can be the exciting part. Houses are houses, but when you’re in an unfamiliar place, these are houses you haven’t seen before. Streets are streets, but I’m sure there are plenty you’ve never walked down or driven on. Our world has become so comprehensively mapped and hyper-analyzed that it can feel like there’s nothing left to discover, but when was the last time you explored your neighborhood, your street, your backyard, with eyes open like you’re in an unfamiliar place? Adventures and amazing discoveries are right there and they’re waiting for you.
Field Notes: This is a long flight, but in really good shape with a nicely restored house at the very top. Good for getting a little exercise!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
