Trip #11 Perchment Street, Homewood North, Pittsburgh took place on June 25, 2017, and was published on July 28, 2017.
Looking like an exotic flower dropped in a patch of unruly grasses, the fire hydrant glows yellow and turquoise green. The colors are hypnotizing, and the wooden steps soft and warm. The earthy quiet radiates in me, through me, wrapping me in stillness. In this very moment, there is nothing to miss. That empty darkness is on a horizon so far away I cannot see it because the treeline blocks my view. Every breath fills me, and in my mind, I am flying up and above these stairs just like the Robin darting back and forth across the street, from branch to branch, tree to tree. Lifting up, higher and higher into the air, we are both so light and full of ease.
Field Notes: Another sweet spot on a quiet road. The first wooden flight I’ve been to and in reasonably solid condition.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
