Trip #114 Heim St. to Bessie Ave. Spring Hill, Pittsburgh

March 30, 2018Laura ZurowskiFiled Under: Spring Hill-City View

Trip #114 Heim Street to Bessie Avenue, Spring Hill, Pittsburgh took place on March 17, 2018, and was published on March 30, 2018.

We tend to avoid a lot of things. Uncomfortable situations, painful memories, people we don’t understand. How much time do you think we spend looking the other way? Whether it’s declining a phone call from a contentious family member or ignoring the person standing at the intersection asking for money, it’s probably more frequent than we’d like to admit. Why do we do this? If we paid attention to what we’re trying to avoid, we might discover some significant details. Details about ourselves, details about those situations, people, places, memories. But it’s not easy. In fact, it’s so very hard. And that’s probably why we avoid it, and all the troubling, annoying, icky-sticky bits in the first place.

Field Notes: Many of the roads and homes around here have been impacted by the recent hill-slides. This stairway has a lot of dumping around it, but there’s a great view of the city from the base of it.

Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!

See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
