Trip #116 Waldorf Street to Radium Street, Perry North, Pittsburgh took place on March 19, 2018, and was published on April 4, 2018.
We often think that “seeing is believing,” but the sense of sight alone offers only a thin slice of information. For every bit we see, and subsequently judge (good, bad, something in-between), there are so many details we may never know. Our eyes can identify only the tip of a very large iceberg. The reasons that may explain why something appears as it does, or why someone has behaved in a particular manner, are often lurking under the surface, stuck behind closed doors and boarded up windows, tucked inside dusty attic boxes. It is in these places the stories are kept. The tales which haven’t been shared in years and the secrets their owners kept close. They’re here, somewhere, you just can’t see them.
Field Notes: A super quiet flight on a residential street. Pretty pine trees on either side and lots of chirping birds. Quite lovely!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
