Trip #123 Willing Street to Mohler Street, Homewood North, Pittsburgh took place on April 8, 2018, and was published on April 20, 2018.
You need to start somewhere, and that’s often the hardest part. We like thinking about starting but… not right now. We’ll start when we’re feeling stronger, happier, more… something. And of course, it goes without saying that we don’t want to start small. We want to start BIG! Make a BIG SPLASH! Be super-duper awesome right out of the gate without even breaking a sweat. We don’t want to be like some humble 6-step flight on a quiet corner; we want to be the Instagram-worthy grand concourse! But you have to start somewhere, and if you wait until all the conditions are met, and all the planets and stars are aligned in perfect harmony to guarantee your immediate success, then you’ll never start at all. Start with six steps. Start today.
Field Notes: These are right around the corner from the “disappearing” Ferndale Street stairs I visited at the start of this project. In addition to photographing these, I was able to go back and see what Ferndale looked like with all the weeds/greenery out of the way!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
