Trip #124 Broadcrest Drive, Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar, Pittsburgh took place on April 13, 2018, and was published on April 23, 2018.
For a long time, I felt that every problem I encountered needed a solution. And the faster the solution, the better. Take care of it, file it away and move on. But in reality, band-aids do little to heal bigger problems, and unsurprisingly, it wouldn’t be long before the same issue cropped up again. Thrashing about striving to fix surface problems while avoiding their underlying causes results in dizzying disorientation, and you start to feel like a dog obsessively chasing their tail. Breaking this cycle isn’t easy, and while running in circles isn’t exactly fun, sitting still and trying to “be” with my uncomfortable situations and memories isn’t always pleasant either. They say muddy waters clear if left alone, and I’m holding on to that belief, but it can be so damn hard to sit still and “just be” sometimes.
Field Notes: These are sidewalk steps that run along Verona Place off of the Broadcrest Drive development. It an interesting juxtaposition of late 60’s architecture (in Broadcrest) and the older, Dutch colonial-style houses along Verona.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
