Trip #128 Nantasket Street, Greenfield, Pittsburgh took place on April 21, 2018, and was published on May 2, 2018.
Sitting on a quiet flight of city steps is kind of like sitting on your front porch or stoop. (If you’re not lucky enough to have one, find yourself a friend who does and hang out at their place!) When you’re comfortable, and at ease, the line between the sitter (you) and the sit (step) becomes slightly blurred, and before you know it, you’re attached and don’t want to move along. Time passes by, and you start to enjoy staying put and taking in the little pieces of the world right in front of you. Try it; you’ll like it better than that overstuffed couch and the 543+channels on cable TV. And sure, bring along a snack and something to drink. Just don’t litter when you’re done, ok?
Field Notes: A little wooden flight with a bright red fire hydrant tucket up against a retaining wall at the end of Nantasket Street. Looks like a little road was later put in to connect it to Neeb Street.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
