Trip #129 Alger Street to Neeb Street (Hoosac Street), Greenfield, Pittsburgh took place on April 21, 2018, and was published on May 4, 2018.
Hoosic Street is deceptively steep. You walk down its sidewalk steps thinking it’s all easy-peasy and gee-whiz look at those awesome Greenfield views, but once you get to the bottom, you need to go back up, and the steep grade can be a challenge! It’s situations like this when we discover our tipping point from “comfortable” to “uncomfortable.” Of course, footwear choice can help or hinder this progression, and on this particular day, I wasn’t well prepared. Every step uphill afforded me the opportunity to discover new examples of comfort transitioning to discomfort. A lesson learned and a mistake I won’t make again!
Field Notes: Neeb Street features sidewalk steps on both sides of the street. There have been lots of modifications over the years, but the rails are still there!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
