Trip #138 Halsey Place, Marshall-Shadeland, Pittsburgh took place on May 9, 2018, and was published on May 25, 2018.
Everyone has a few things they believe in, and while some beliefs may stay steadfast, others shift and morph and perhaps are abandoned for something else entirely. In the here and now on Halsey Place, I believe in a grass so powerfully green that just looking at it makes me feel alive. I believe in the warm sun and the smattering of clouds. I believe in the scrawny twisted trees and the rotting stumps and branches scattered on the hillside. I believe in skinny girls with hula-hoops and little boys with bikes. I believe in the old man sitting on an aluminum lawn chair with five cats lounging at his feet. I believe in the red-tailed hawk circling over all of us, looking for something that can be dinner. I believe in summer and I’m glad it finally has arrived.
Field Notes: This is a cool little stairway/walkway! Three separate flights of stairs meet up on this walkway that connects them all. The grass is SUPER green right now. It’s kind of crazy to look at – almost unreal looking.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
