Trip #145 Woodland Avenue to Dill Way, Marshall-Shadeland, Pittsburgh took place on May 26, 2018, and was published on June 11, 2018.
We’ve heard the expression a million times before, one person’s trash is another’s treasure. The perceived value of an object can change over time, based on our interpretation, the appeal of its appearance, and our imagination. But, despite our fickle, changeable nature, the object itself stays constant. The jasmine and honeysuckle covered stairs on Woodland Avenue make me feel like I’ve just unearthed a 1920s Chanel dress from the “last chance” discount box at Goodwill. The wear and tear might be obvious but the hidden glamor of a precious gem still shines through.
Field Notes: What an adventure! Can’t get to these any longer from Dill Way but there is a hidden, overgrown entrance on Woodland! The lower portion requires a bit of bushwhacking but there is a walkable portion.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
