Trip #147 California Avenue, Marshall-Shadeland, Pittsburgh took place on May 25, 2018, and was published on June 15, 2018.
The hot sun is beating down and I feel like a bug scurrying along the concrete desperately looking for shade before I fry to a crisp. I’m here on Woodland Avenue, but I’m not really here. In my mind, I’m thinking of a dozen other things I need to do next and a dozen other things I’d rather be doing than walking up and down steep city streets in the broiling sun. Thoughts are shouting here there and everywhere but I can’t seem to quiet them. I know I’m the only one responsible for my “peace of mind” but sometimes getting the pieces of peace to come together feels like herding cats.
Field Notes: This is a little tiny three-step flight right at the corner of Woodland and California. Coming down the street, you can barely see it as it blends in with the sidewalk! Good thing the railing is there.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
