Trip #148 Ireland Way, Marshall-Shadeland, Pittsburgh took place on May 27, 2018, and was published on June 18, 2018.
Ask yourself, how alive am I willing to be? Am I willing to carry the blazing heat on my back and the smell of decay in my nostrils? Am I willing to look unflinchingly at the wounds and scars marking our history? Am I willing to sit with pain and tightness and fear and compassion and joy and love? Am I willing to gaze with soft eyes at the forgotten beauty of the Ireland Way? Am I willing to accept the warm sun on my face and breathe in the aroma of jasmine and honeysuckle? Ask yourself again, how alive am I willing to be?
Field Notes: Last stop for Volume 2, Issue 1! A quiet little side street on a hot and humid Sunday. These stairs will be covered and hidden by the vines in no time.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
