Trip #152 Oakhill Street, Marshall-Shadeland, Pittsburgh took place on June 13, 2018, and was published on June 27, 2018.
The earth spins at a dizzying rate and even though the speed is constant, our lives unfold at a pace that is forever accelerating. While we can’t stop the globe’s motion, we can slow ourselves down. Our experience in the world doesn’t have to be a blur; we can slow down to a walk every once in a while and see all the beautiful little bits that make up our surroundings. And, if you’re looking for a super nice spot to give this a try, the Oakhill Street stairs in Marshall-Shadeland are highly recommended. It’s a great place to see the big picture and a seemingly endless supply of little ones.
Field Notes: Wow! A super cool wooden flight that connects two dead-end streets – one of which is red brick. People on either side of the flight have very creatively designed yards and landscaping – very relaxing to sit on the stairs in the middle of it all.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
