Trip #156 Vinial Street, Spring Garden, Pittsburgh took place on June 23, 2018, and was published on July 6, 2018.
It always makes me mad, and then terribly sad, when I see the hurtful and hateful words people say online. Whether it’s chat rooms, the comment sections on blogs and social media, memes, or videos, if there’s a public forum, people are certain to make statements they might never say in a face to face situation. It’s too easy to lash out thoughtlessly, hurtfully, with no concern of the result. Technology does help people establish community and stay together, but to authentically connect, we need time in each other’s presence. We need our movements and sounds to fill the space. We need to see each other’s expressions and emotions. Why are we becoming afraid to look into another being’s eyes and see who they really are? Why are we so often afraid of others?
Field Notes: Tiny little sidewalk flight that rounds the corner from Vinial up to Salter Way. Right near flight #155.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
