Trip #157 Tell Street, Spring Garden, Pittsburgh took place on June 25, 2018, and was published on July 9, 2018.
The creatures of the natural world are wild and free despite our attempts to corral them, despite our desires to make them behave in some manner we’ve decided is correct and useful and valuable. The cats of Tell Street roam and stretch and huddle and roll. Watching and listening, sniffing and maybe, maybe, maybe, wanting a chin scratch… or maybe, maybe, maybe NOT. They are as wild and free as they want to be when they want to be. I really have no say in their decision-making process (especially as I come empty-handed, with nary a cat treat to be found in my backpack).
Field Notes: This is a sunken sidewalk flight right next to the Threadbare Cider parking lot. I’m not sure exactly where it ends as the top part is very integrated into the two houses on either side at the end of the street (the road is a dead end). There are lots of cats wandering around the street and they’re reasonably friendly.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
