Trip #158 Rising Way, West Oakland, Pittsburgh took place on July 5, 2018, and was published on July 11, 2018.
When we undertake an investigation it’s because there is a strong, compelling reason for seeking answers. We often think of investigation in terms of crime or legal action, be it can be applied to any topic that gnaws at us to dig deeper. When curiosity or outrage strikes, if we fuel the fire with direct action, the possibility increases that we’ll discover something about the world and ourselves. These discoveries, small or large, personal or global, can then help to foster healing. So, get out there and bring those questions swirling around in your brain to the next level. Investigate them with all of your senses, your heart, and your soul. You might be surprised by what you uncover.
Field Notes: Rising Way is a wooden flight right off of 5th Ave near the Birmingham Bridge and the start of Uptown (although this is technically considered West Oakland on the map).
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
