Trip #166 Winterburn Avenue, Greenfield, Pittsburgh took place on July 23, 2018, and was published on July 30, 2018.
Once upon a time, I visited London, and one of my favorite impressions of English culture was the “Mind the gap!” announcements made in the tube stations. So thoughtful. So mindful. If you do not mind the gaps, you may trip and stumble. You might even “fall into the gap” which could be extremely detrimental. But, if your mind is minding the present moment, and focused on where you’re going, then a gap doesn’t come as a big surprise. You step over it or go around. No big deal. Gaps are everywhere, and they serve a good purpose; they force you to be present and in-tune with your surroundings (which may be better for you in the long run than going out and buying clothes).
Field Notes: A wooden flight right off of Neeb Street. I’ve visited so many stairways in this neighborhood now!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
