Trip #172 Greenfield Avenue to Waldeck Street, Greenfield, Pittsburgh took place on July 30, 2018, and was published on August 13, 2018.
City skylines are created, built over time, and forever changing. I’m thinking about this as I sit high above Greenfield Avenue, on 128 steps constructed in 1945. And considering the view from my perch, I’m amazed. I’m awed by the constructed landscape. All of what I see is the result of someone with the conviction that building was important, necessary. Build stairs, build skyscrapers, build roads and bridges and tunnels and houses and shops. Everything we build changes our world. When we move from talking about changing the world to the act of doing, when we engage in the actual building of the change we want to see, our landscape, our environment and the space we inhabit are forever altered.
Field Notes: Wow! Amazing view of downtown from these very steep steps. Cool location and in very good shape.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
