Trip #174 Anthony Street Greenfield, Pittsburgh

August 17, 2018Laura ZurowskiFiled Under: Greenfield

Trip #174 Anthony Street, Greenfield, Pittsburgh took place on August 4, 2018, and was published on August 17, 2018.

Throughout our lives, we learn to speak and write and use our bodies to express ourselves. But despite all of the words in the dictionary and all of the symbols and gestures and sounds at our disposal, it’s still so challenging to communicate feelings. How can we articulate the physical sensations of a heart overflowing with love, the writhing of an anxious stomach or that heavy ache in the throat that comes on with grief? These written descriptors are used time and again but they still can’t capture the sensations – they merely offer a standard frame of reference. How can we let others know what we are feeling when all of the languages at our disposal aren’t enough?

Field Notes: This flight runs right along the side of a nearly 100-year-old Byzantine church. The stairs run from the sidewalk up and into the hillside. However, the main portion is closed off and quite overgrown – you can only make it as far as the connector to Ivondale Street.

Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!

See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
