Trip #175 Gladstone Street, Hazelwood, Pittsburgh took place on August 4, 2018, and was published on August 20, 2018.
When I visit our city’s public stairs, I typically refrain from judging or comparing one to another. Every stairway is different, has a different feel, a different look. But today, I’m breaking my rule because the Gladstone Street stairs in Greenfield and Hazelwood are SOOOO AWESOME! Yes, there’s a little trash at the start of the Greenfield side, but as you walk along these 140 stairs and raised platforms, you feel like you’re in a nature preserve complete with gurgling water, marsh grasses, birds and butterflies, and honeybees. The next time you’re in this neighborhood, stop and take a walk around. Someone even left a “parking chair” so you can rest for a bit and enjoy nature!
Field Notes: One of the BEST city steps I’ve visited so far. You feel like you’re in a nature preserve! There’s a walkway and then a flight of stairs that take you through the area abutting the Hazelwood Greenway – birds and flowers everywhere.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
