Trip #176 Hilltop Street Hazelwood, Pittsburgh

August 22, 2018Laura ZurowskiFiled Under: Hazelwood

Trip #176 Hilltop Street, Hazelwood, Pittsburgh took place on August 6, 2018, and was published on August 22, 2018.

Our personal experiences can twist and turn us into nots – and that’s NOT a typo! Think about all the nots you carry around with you: cannot, will not, do not, should not. “Oh no, that’s not for someone like me!” The next time you stop yourself with a NOT ask yourself why. Why shouldn’t I do that activity? Why can’t I go into that store? Why don’t I apply to that school? Why won’t I visit that neighborhood? Sometimes, we have good and valid reasons, but other times we DO NOT. So, the next time you find yourself in knots over nots, give those ties that bind a few snips; you might find yourself saying, “Oh yes, that’s so ME!”

Field Notes: Hilltop Street has a wooden flight that is starting to get a bit wobbly but still functional. In the middle is a dirt path connecting the two flights on either side. I came across a large family of wild turkeys (tried to be quiet but I still ended up scaring them away…)

Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!

See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
