Trip #177 Hilltop Street, Hazelwood, Pittsburgh took place on August 6, 2018, and was published on August 24, 2018.
Between our personal experiences, scientific studies, and self-help books, we know what behaviors and actions bring on lasting, authentic happiness: Surround yourself with supportive friends, be kind and appreciative, volunteer your time or skills, cultivate a generous and giving outlook in whatever way you can. Despite this knowledge, it seems like so many of us are still searching, somewhat unhappily, for some secret combination of people, things, and stuff that will make us feel good. “I’d be happy if I had the perfect job, the perfect romantic partner, the perfect haircut or house or car or … (insert any nouns of your choosing).” Why do we continue to pick the fleeting happiness that comes with designer shoes, exotic vacations, or fancy cars over keeping a gratitude journal, helping others or just smiling more? Why do we shortchange ourselves and settle for so little when we know what to do to have so much more?
Field Notes: Nicely cared for neighborhood flight. Lots of birds and greenery and not too much trash. Very quiet and peaceful.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
