Trip #179 Berwick Street, Hazelwood, Pittsburgh took place on August 11, 2018, and was published on August 29, 2018.
Am I a leader or a follower? Depending on the situation, I tend to think of myself as one or the other, but in reality, we all need to be both. Leading doesn’t mean running a Fortune 500 company; it can be as simple as taking the initiative and helping where help is needed. Following doesn’t mean checking your individuality at the door, you can still be you even when you’re in a group, standing side by side in solidarity. Deciding to follow can help make a stronger leader, and deciding to lead can help make a stronger follower. When they are performed with authenticity and integrity, the roles are not so distinct after all. I will be a follower, and through following, I will learn to lead. I will be a leader, and through leading, I will learn to follow.
Field Notes: Berwick Street has sidewalk stairs that run near the YMCA building. There is a curious-looking tree that has long, bean-like pods hanging off of it.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
