Flowers to Hazelwood Hazelwood Pittsburgh Trip #187

September 17, 2018Laura ZurowskiFiled Under: Hazelwood

Trip #187 Flowers Avenue to Hazelwood Avenue, Hazelwood, Pittsburgh took place on September 3, 2018, and was published on September 17, 2018.

What do you want to make? A painting, a sculpture, a cake, a quilt, a film, a ‘zine, a garden, a podcast, a song, a scrapbook, a birdhouse, a bat-house? Start making it. Step away from those people who think your idea is silly or a waste of time. Step away from that inside voice saying it’s silly or a waste of time. If you want to make something, start making it. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never done this before, YouTube, books, your friends and your brain will help figure it out. Help might even be found inside the Book House on the corner of Flowers and Nansen in Hazelwood. Why is there is a book house here? Because someone decided they wanted to make it – and then they did.

Field Notes: These stairs are partially closed but they lead along the most curious street (Nansen Street)! Kind of looks like the site of a housing co-operative or communal living space. Lots of gardens, art, and spaces that have been re-purposed for socializing and relaxing!

Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
