Trip #191 Pius Street to Roscoe Street (Oporto Street), Southside Slopes, Pittsburgh took place on September 13, 2018, and was published on September 26, 2018.
It was during a 4th-grade parent-teacher conference that my Language Arts teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said I wanted to be a writer (I had just finished reading Little Women and was utterly captivated by Jo March). I also remember Mrs. G’s somewhat quizzical look – after all, I could barely construct simple sentences without spelling errors, and my penmanship was average at best. I might not have been a writer at age nine, but I was a reader, and I was a reader with a BIG imagination. That imagination allowed me to see that I had many, many things I wanted to say, to put down on paper, even if I hadn’t yet mastered the arts of “language.” Fast forward to today; I’m very thankful that while I was imagining my future life, others were imagining personal computers (with spell check!), the internet, and all the other technological advancements that have helped me become the person I always wanted to be. Imagination helps all of us realize our potential.
Field Notes: Oporto Street can barely fit one car but this flight has a great view of the houses down on Southside Flats. The colors and shapes are lovely.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
