Trip #194 South 18th Street to St Paul Street, Southside Slopes, Pittsburgh took place on September 24, 2018, and was published on October 3, 2018.
Human nature can be so illogical. Case in point; we often reject or avoid what we know to be good for us. Being out in nature is one of those “good” things. Even if we didn’t have the research studies showing it improves mental health, relieves stress, lowers blood pressure… we’d know these to be true based on our own experiences relaxing on a sandy beach, hiking in the mountains, or sitting with a sketchbook in a garden or park. But all too often, we decide to stay inside, or head to the mall for some “retail therapy.” Don’t worry though, nature is persistent. It’s out there, patiently waiting for you, waiting for you to give it another chance. Because nature knows, once you fall in love with the great outdoors, there’s no turning back. Nature’s sneaky that way!
Field Notes: This is a long but narrow flight that connects South 18th Street to St. Paul Street. I wonder why it was constructed in such a “skinny” manner? There’s is a little side-step area that once led to something, but who knows what now…
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
