Trip #196 Hartford Street, Southside Slopes, Pittsburgh took place on September 29, 2018, and was published on October 8, 2018.
Hermana is “sister” in Spanish, and this gets me thinking about all the sisters I’ve had and have in my life. The one related by blood and the others related by spirit. Sisters who take care of you, give you advice, call you out, hold you when you’re crying and angry at the world, celebrating when you’re riding high, feeling fabulous and powerful and 100% you. Sisters who are doing good works but aren’t above going out and raisin’ a little hell. Sharing stories, telling tall tales, laughing until the tears are rolling. My sisters, you know who you are. I love you and need our sisterhood every single day. Wherever you are, wherever the journey takes you, I am with you. I wouldn’t change what we have for all the world.
Field Notes: Hartford Street has a cool wooden flight that transitions into a regular concrete flight. Leads down to the Knoxville Greenway nature trail. There are some good examples of old foundations (what appears to have been an orphan house).
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
