Trip #2 Inglenook Place, East Hills, Pittsburgh took place on June 3, 2017, and was published on July 7, 2017.
I saw some signs of you, and it made me wonder how things would be different now. I am finding it hard to stay even during this crazy time. Everywhere I go people are on edge, angry, the cars seem to pass by me faster, the voices on the street loud and angry. Not far from where I sit a woman is hollering at someone. People raise their voice in anger all the time, but now it feels more threatening. I’m trying to sit still, to watch the Blue Jays and the Cardinals squabble over territory. My attention fixates on a white moth gliding through the sunshine. The green overgrowth feels good, comforting like a secret place I can hide in and pretend the outside world is something else, with some other people.
Field Notes: Cool little street – so quiet and green. The stairs were so isolated and unused that I felt very comfortable sitting for an extended period of time.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
