Trip #200 Saint Thomas Street, Southside Slopes, Pittsburgh took place on October 5, 2018, and was published on October 17, 2018.
People often think of progress with a capital P. And that kind of “Progress” is often about reaching a goal or finish line – the destination. But in reality, progress is all the little steps between where you are and where you want to be. Progress is a journey made of lower case letters with chutes, ladders, squiggles, and a circle. Some days start low but end high, others start off nicely but gradually deteriorate, and some days, well… some days you just feel like a hamster on a wheel. The steps of progress relate to one another and combine and re-combine in ways you rarely imagine at the outset. Progress is what makes the journey, the journey. And for this journey, I am making progress. This is Pittsburgh city steps visit #200.
Field Notes: This flight starts down at South 18th and then turns into a little walkway between houses before connecting with the street. It’s pretty nice.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
