Trip #202 St. Thomas Street, Southside Slopes, Pittsburgh took place on October 14, 2018, and was published on October 22, 2018.
Interconnectedness. Sometimes, it’s a warm and comfortable blanket. Other times it’s stifling, harmful, and something we turn away from. Walking away from previous connections can give us the distance to re-invent ourselves, embark on a fresh start, or afford us time to be an anonymous face in the crowd. But ultimately, we can’t escape our connection to others. It may be six degrees of separation or 600, but we’re still a part of this web called humanity. It doesn’t take long to connect dots and draw lines. Everyone knows someone’s mother, brother, cousin, ex-best friend, co-worker, high school history teacher. We’re all in this together.
Field Notes: St. Thomas Street has such a cool flight! It goes past an orphan house (lived in but in considerable decay). A gorgeous church at the bottom – St. Michael’s. Also lots of cats! (think they are fed by the owner of the orphan house…)
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
