Trip #206 Windom Street, Southside Slopes, Pittsburgh took place on October 18, 2018, and was published on October 31, 2018.
This flight leads to an overpass, and it gets me thinking about that word. Overpass. An overpass frequently provides a shortcut up and over an obstruction, guiding you safely and quickly to the other side. In this case, the obstacle is train tracks. I waited some time to watch a train to pass under, but no luck. This stairway is easy to pass over, it’s a bit hidden on a narrow section of Windom Street, but if you look through the tall grass, it’s there, across the street from a row of houses being rehabbed. New windows, doors, siding. The air buzzes with sounds of tools and their workers. The overpass brings people to this street, and the street is getting ready for them. This street does not want to be passed over by whomever or whatever is coming down (or across) the tracks.
Field Notes: Bob Regan’s book indicates this flight goes to a “closed” overpass, but it is now open and looks recently refurbished! Very nice walk over the train tracks – clear and clean. Leads right to the end of S 10th Street.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
