Trip #214 Mission Street to Sumner Street, Southside Slopes, Pittsburgh took place on October 28, 2018, and was published on November 19, 2018.
I’m sitting on these stairs and the air is pulsing with sounds – blaring dance music, voices singing, shouts of exclamation. Clearly, there’s a party happening on this otherwise quiet Sunday afternoon, and the source appears to be a triple-decker one street up. Someone, along with many other someones, is having a good time (right now, let’s see how they’re feeling come the morning). Hopefully, everyone who lives on the block has also gone over to the triple-decker for a drinking and singing and boisterously good time. But something tells me this is probably not the case.
Field Notes: Sidewalk flight on a narrow, hilly road on the Southside Slopes. The afternoon I visited, one of the triple-deckers up the street had a LOT of singing/yelling/shouting coming from it. Kind of funny, but I don’t have to live next to it!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
