Trip #220 Josephine Street to Northview Street, Southside Slopes, Pittsburgh took place on October 30, 2018, and was published on December 3, 2018.
Every day we’re lifting weights, and I’m not talking about the ones at the gym. We carry the weight of the world on our backs and our shoulders and in our minds. We lug around a collection of other people’s baggage, in addition to our own. These weights are emotional and psychological and physical and oh-so-heavy. Pumping iron at the gym can make your body strong, but the internal weights wear you down, slow you down, break you down. It’s time to clean out all those unwanted, unwelcome weights and let them find a happy home elsewhere. Recycle unneeded weights, and they’ll be transformed into something new! Donate, because one person’s PITA weight is another person’s DIY treasure! And if your parking space is on the edge of a hillside, and you’re worried about driving over the edge, consider the example in photo four of how to transform an uninspiring weight bench into a make-shift jersey barrier. #creativereuse
Field Notes: And this visit marks the end of flights for the third issue of Mis.Steps: Our Missed Connections with Pittsburgh’s City Steps. This flight leads up past a park/playground to Northview Street. Some old foundations and walls are scattered around the hillside.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
