Trip #221 Salisbury Street to Berg Street Southside Slopes, Pittsburgh took place on November 22, 2018, and was published on December 7, 2018.
“Right now, pay attention to the present moment. Enjoy what you’re doing. Appreciate fully what you have.”
I wrote these words when I visited the Cologne Street stairs on Thanksgiving afternoon as I generally associate the holiday with gratitude and appreciation. Keeping those ideas in mind lifts the spirit a bit, especially on a day that’s often fraught with dietary disasters, polarizing political pontification, and failing football teams. But in reality, any day can be a thanks-giving day, and to be honest, it’s a little bit easier when all the guests are gone, the dishes put away, and the television shut off.
Field Notes: Came by here on Thanksgiving and it was so quiet! Kind of chilly but nice to walk around. This stairway has one or two empty lots running alongside it where houses used to be.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
