Trip #227 Lauer Street, Southside Slopes, Pittsburgh took place on December 7, 2018, and was published on December 21, 2018.
When you’re familiar with a place, you think you know everything there is to know. You think you know where everything is and how it all looks. And then one day, BAM! a landscape view hits you right between the eyes, and before you know it, you’ve shifted out of auto-pilot and into that star-struck sensation of discovering something truly awesome. And struck I am, so I swoon at the sky and the skyscrapers, marvel over the speeding cars and the lumbering freight train, drink in all that green and yellow and brick red – and then, OH MY GOD! I spy a giant barge slowly working its way down the river. This view is an all you can eat buffet for the eyes.
.
In my prior travels investigating stairways in this neighborhood, I’d seen many sights, but I’d not seen this one. Five minutes ago, I was thinking that I knew exactly what I’d see when I came to this place. Well, that’ll learn ya.
.
Happy Holidays, everyone!!
Field Notes: This is the uppermost part of the Lauer Street stairs – directly off of Arlington Ave. The view is drop-dead fantastic! You can’t see the whole city, but you sure see plenty!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
