Trip #231 Selby Way to McArdel Roadway, Southside Slopes, Pittsburgh took place on December 13, 2018, and was published on January 2, 2019.
In a move not unlike Henny-Penny in The Sky is Falling, I was about to photograph the S 10th Street stairs that cross the train tracks up to Windom Street, but succumbed to distraction when I came upon Turkey-lurkey hanging out on Selby Way. “Goodness gracious me!” we exclaimed upon seeing the road covered in road construction debris, litter, and trash. It seemed only right that “We must go and tell the King!” but while trying to figure out whom that might be, the alarm on my phone went off, signaling the need to get back to work. I turned around and bustled off, forgetting all about the stairs around the corner, but fortunately averting a run-in with Foxy-woxy (which would have resulted in any number of gothic tragedies known to happen when the main character naively strikes up a conversation with a hungry carnivore). The End. #kindofatruestory
Field Notes: In my defense, I had already photographed the stairs that cross over the train tracks to Windom Street, but this entry pertained to the stairs as the start at S 10th Street. However, I parked on Selby Way, saw the turkey graffiti and it seemed like a much more interesting and fun choice!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
